Empowering Children with Hearing Loss through Art & Stories

Little Listeners Publishing makes hearing loss topics fun & playful! By changing the way hearing loss and hearing devices are portrayed in children's literature, we aim to foster a sense of pride, excitement, and wonder in young readers. Our ultimate goal is to ensure that children with hearing loss have resources that encourage self-love and love for their hearing devices, leading to more consistent use and better hearing outcomes.

  • Fun, Unique Books For Kids with Hearing Loss
  • Holistic Approach to Pediatric Hearing Loss
  • Created by a Pediatric Audiologist
The Traveling Library: Dr. Stacey Armas has curated a comprehensive collection of over 100 books focused on hearing loss and hearing devices. The Traveling Library brings these books to deaf and hard of hearing programs or loans them to pediatric audiology clinics. School resources are often limited, and it's unlikely they have a selection of books about kids with hearing loss. By increasing access to these books, we aim to make children feel represented and understood. The collection includes Dr. Armas's own titles, "My Hearing, My Way," and "Alma's Hearing Journey."

Welcome to Little Listeners Publishing

Welcome to Little Listeners Publishing, founded by Dr. Stacey Armas, a Pediatric Audiologist who identified a common issue among children with hearing loss: many children resist wearing their hearing aids due to aesthetic concerns, impacting their self-esteem and consistent use of the devices. This inconsistency leads to suboptimal hearing and risks delays in speech, academics, and social-emotional development. Recognizing the urgent need for representation and positive reinforcement, Dr. Armas combined her expertise with her creative spirit to establish Little Listeners Publishing.

At Little Listeners Publishing, our mission is to celebrate children with hearing loss and present hearing devices as vibrant, fun, and stylish accessories that reflect the unique personalities of the children who wear them. We highlight these devices in our illustrations and stories, normalizing and celebrating their visibility rather than hiding them. By integrating play and self-expression, we make learning about and using hearing devices enjoyable and memorable, effectively addressing challenging topics in an engaging manner. Studies show that children learn faster through play, making this approach particularly effective.

Our books feature diverse characters proudly wearing personalized hearing devices, empowering children to express themselves and make decisions about their hearing devices. This personalization fosters a sense of ownership and pride, enhancing their willingness to wear and enjoy their devices. By changing the narrative around hearing devices, we aim to foster inclusivity, empowerment, and understanding, ultimately helping children embrace their hearing devices with confidence and joy. Join us as we create a world where hearing devices are celebrated, not hidden, transforming children’s experiences through the power of play and self-expression.

What Makes Our Books Special?

Prominent Hearing Devices in Illustrations

In our books, hearing devices are not just accessories; they are as important as the central characters! Each illustration ensures that hearing devices are prominently visible and celebrated, rather than hidden.

This approach helps normalize and embrace hearing devices as an essential and celebrated part of the characters’ identities, fostering a positive perception among young readers.

Emphasis Personalization and Style

We showcase the endless possibilities for personalizing hearing devices, from colorful designs to unique decorations. Our stories inspire children to view their hearing aids as stylish accessories that enhance their appearance and express their personality, making them more likely to wear and enjoy them.

Encourage Hearing Device Use through Empowerment & Self-Confidence

Little Listeners’ books promote self-love, confidence, and empowerment among young readers with hearing loss. By featuring characters who proudly wear their devices, these stories help children perceive their hearing devices as valuable tools that enhance their experiences and communication abilities, embrace their devices, and view them as an integral part of their identity, fostering a positive attitude towards hearing device use.

Education & Awareness

Each of Little Listeners’ books weaves valuable educational content seamlessly into engaging narratives. Through these stories, children enjoy an entertaining reading experience but also gain a deeper understanding of hearing loss, hearing devices, and the importance of embracing differences.  Dr. Armas’s books serve as an invaluable resource for parents, educators, and healthcare professionals seeking to educate children about hearing loss in a fun and accessible way.

Sparking Conversations

The power of Little Listeners’ books extends beyond the pages. They serve as conversation starters, fostering open dialogue between children, parents, and caregivers about hearing loss, inclusivity, and the importance of communication. These stories encourage meaningful discussions that promote understanding, acceptance, and support within families, schools, and communities.

Read In Spanish

Little Listeners Publishing is  keenly aware of the limited availability of children’s books about hearing loss in Spanish. We are excited to announce the debut of the Spanish versions of our existing books, designed to meet the needs of Spanish-speaking families. By expanding our offerings, we aim to bridge the gap in resources  in homes where Spanish is the primary language.

Mi Audición a Mi Manera” and “El Viaje Auditivo de Alma” will making their debut on July 1st 2024!
